Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Fratelli Beretta Antipasto Gran Beretta

In January 2024, health officials linked an outbreak of Salmonella to charcuterie meat trays from Costco and Sam’s Club.

How Many People Got Sick?

As of January 17, 2024, a total of 47 illnesses were reported in 22 states between November 2023 and January 2024. Ten people were hospitalized due to a severe illness. No deaths were reported.

The warning involves Fratelli Beretta Antipasto Gran Beretta (sold at Costco stores nationwide), and Busseto Foods Charcuterie Sampler (sold at Sam’s Club).

What is Fratelli Beretta Antipasto Gran Beretta?

Fratelli Beretta® Antipasto Gran Beretta is a charcuterie meat tray that contains black pepper coated dry salami, Italian dry salami, dry coppa, and prosciutto. It was sold at Costco. The product came in a twin-pack containing two 12-oz. trays. All lot codes are affected by the recall.

What Happened?

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture collected an intact, unopened twin-package of Busseto® Charcuterie Sampler from a sick person’s home. The package tested positive for a strain of Salmonella that is closely related to the bacteria from sick people.

Salmonella Infections May Be Antibiotic-Resistant

Further tests showed that this strain of Salmonella may be antibiotic-resistant, according to the CDC:

“If antibiotics are needed, some illnesses in this outbreak may be difficult to treat with some commonly recommended antibiotics and may require a different antibiotic choice.”

Busseto Foods Charcuterie Meat Recall

On January 3, 2024, a recall was issued for approximately 11,097 pounds of Busseto Foods Charcuterie Sampler, including:

  • 18-oz. plastic tray packages containing “BUSSETO FOODS CHARCUTERIE SAMPLER Prosciutto, Sweet Sopressata, and Dry Coppa” with lot code L075330300 and “BEST IF USED BY APR 27 24.” The products are sold as a twin pack with two 9-oz. packages.
