June 5, 2025 — A judge in Colorado upheld a $9 million award to a woman who was burned by a pressure cooker.
The lawsuit was filed by Georgina P., a woman from Denver who suffered 2nd- and 3rd-degree burns when her Crock Pot Express Crock Multi-Cooker exploded in a horrific kitchen accident in 2019.
Her lawsuit went to trial, and in December 2024, a jury in Colorado awarded her $55 million in damages from Sunbeam Products and Newell Brands, manufacturers of the Crock Pot Pressure Cooker.
On May 29, Judge Phillip A. Brimmer issued an order ruling that Colorado laws limiting statutory damages must reduce the award to around $9 million in damages that Sunbeam and Newell must pay.
According to her lawsuit, she was using the pressure cooker setting on her Crock-Pot Multi-Cooker to make beans. About 20 minutes after the beans were done, she tried to open the steam release valve. Instead, the pressure cooker “violently exploded” and burned her.
A few months after she was severely burned, Sunbeam and Newell recalled Crock-Pot Multi-Cookers after “119 reports of lid detachment, resulting in 99 burn injuries ranging in severity from 1st-to 3rd degree.”
Her lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado — Perez v. Sunbeam et al. — Case Number 1:21-cv-01915.
