Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Seafood & Sushi Restaurants
In October 2021, health officials reported a multi-state Salmonella outbreak linked to seafood and sushi that was linked to products from Northeast Seafood Products. The seafood was sold at Albertsons, Sprouts, Safeway, restaurants, and other locations out of the fresh seafood case. Most of the sick people were Colorado residents or people who traveled to Colorado.
How Many People Are Sick?
The Salmonella Thompson outbreak linked to seafood has sickened at least 102 people in 14 states, with 82 of those illnesses reported in Colorado. Only two people did not report travel to Colorado during the week before they got sick.
Northeast Seafood Products Recalls Seafood for Salmonella Risk
On October 8, Northeast Seafood Products recalled a variety of raw fresh seafood products due to an outbreak of Salmonella.
The products being recalled are:
- Haddock
- Monkfish
- Bone-in Trout
- Grouper
- Red Snapper
- Red Rock Cod
- Ocean Perch
- Pacific Cod
- Halibut
- Coho Salmon
- Atlantic Salmon Portions
- Lane Snapper
- Tilapia
- All Natural Salmon Fillet
- Pacific Sole
- Farm Raised Striped Bass
The seafood was distributed from May 2021 to October 7, 2021 to restaurants and Albertsons, Safeway, and Sprouts supermarkets in Colorado, where it was sold out of their fresh seafood cases.
The recall was issued after an FDA inspection of the facility was positive for the outbreak strain of Salmonella Thompson. In response, the production area was was temporarily shut down.
