In October 2024, Dynarex Corporation expanded a recall for Dynacare Baby Powder that may be contaminated with asbestos, a cancer-causing mineral, in the talcum powder ingredient.

The expanded recall includes another 373 cases of Dynacare Baby Powder in 14-oz. bottles (Item Number 4875), as well as 647 cases of Dynacare Baby Powder in 4-oz. bottles (Item number 4874).
The recalled bottles of Dynacare Baby Powder were sent to distributors on or after January 18, 2024, and by direct delivery in the following states: AL, AR, AZ, CA, CO, DE, FL, GA, IA, IL, IN, KY, LA, MA, MD, MN, MO, MS, MT, NC, NE, NJ, NM, NY, OH, OK, OR, PA, TN, TX, UT, VA, VT, WA, WI, and sold online on Amazon.com.
What Happened?
No illnesses or adverse events were reported, but routine FDA tests on Dynacare Baby Powder “revealed that the finished products contained asbestos,” according to the recall on October 28, 2024.
Original Recall Information for Dynacare Baby Powder
The original recall was announced on September 19, 2024, for about 62 cases of Dynacare Baby Powder. The baby powder was packaged in 14-oz. plastic bottles, with 24 bottles to a case. They can be identified by Batch/Lot Number B051, and Expiration Date 2026/12/28 (located on the bottom of the bottle).
Why Did The Recall Expand?
Dynarex expanded the recall because the same bulk talc material was used in other bottles of Dynacare Baby Powder. “Upon further investigation, we have identified additional lots of products that may contain asbestos due to using the same bulk talc material,” the company explained.
What is Dynacare Baby Powder?
Dynacare Baby Powder contains talcum powder, an ingredient that is made of talc. Talc is a naturally-occurring mineral that is mined out of the earth. Talc is extremely soft and absorbs moisture well, but there is a potential health risk. Talcum powder may also contain asbestos.
How Does Asbestos Get In Talcum Powder?
Talc and asbestos are minerals that are commonly found together because they develop under similar conditions. “If talc mining sites are not carefully chosen or if proper steps are not taken to adequately purify the talc ore, it may contain asbestos,” according to the FDA.
What is Asbestos?
Asbestos is a naturally-occurring mineral that is often found near talc, which is why talcum powder is sometimes contaminated with asbestos. Asbestos is also a carcinogen that can cause cancer.
What is the Risk?
The health risks of asbestos are well-documented. Breathing asbestos is linked to mesothelioma, which is an aggressive and often fatal lung cancer. Lawsuits have also been filed by women who developed ovarian cancer after using baby powder that contained talcum powder.
