UPDATE: FDA Confirms Listeria Outbreak Linked to Ice Cream

On August 22, 2023, the FDA issued an update to confirm that the outbreak strain of Listeria monocytogenes was found in an unopened cup of Soft Serve On The Go Ice Cream from a sick person’s home. The strain of Listeria matches the strain causing the outbreak.

In addition, health officials in New York inspected the manufacturing facility for Real Kosher Ice Cream. “Five finished product samples of Soft Serve On The Go Vanilla Chocolate ice cream were reported as positive for Listeria monocytogenes,” according to the FDA. These samples also tested positive for the same strain of Listeria that caused the outbreak.

In August 2023, an outbreak of Listeria was linked to Soft Serve On The Go Ice Cream Cups that were sold by Real Kosher Ice Cream of Brooklyn, NY, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Listeria Found in Ice Cream From Sick Person’s Home

Health officials found Listeria in a cup of Soft Serve On The Go Ice Cream that was collected from a sick person’s home. They are working to determine if it is the outbreak strain of Listeria.

How Many People Got Sick?

The illnesses were reported in Pennsylvania and New York. However, the CDC believes that the true number of sick people in this outbreak is likely much higher, and it may also involve other states.

Real Kosher Ice Cream Announces Recall

On August 9, 2023, Real Kosher Ice Cream recalled all flavors of Soft Serve On The Go® Ice Cream Cups due to a risk of Listeria contamination.

The recall involves kosher ice cream and sorbet in 8-oz. cups. The flavors include Vanilla Chocolate, Caramel, Parve Vanilla Chocolate, Peanut Butter Lite, Razzle, and Sorbet Strawberry Mango.

The ice cream was sold at many types of stores, including grocery stores, convenience stores, and canteens. It was also distributed to long-term care facilities, nursing homes, schools, camps, and others.

What is the Problem?

Health officials are especially concerned about this ice cream because it was served in nursing homes and long-term care facilities. Listeria is far more likely to spread beyond the digestive system and cause deadly complications or death in people over 65 years old.
