The Ice Cream House Recalls All Products for Listeria Risk

On August 30, 2023, the Brooklyn-based dessert company Ice Cream House announced a recall for ice cream and frozen non-dairy desserts that may be contaminated with Listeria bacteria. The recall involves 91 different ice creams and desserts, cakes, sorbets, and other products.

What Happened?

The Ice Cream House shares a manufacturing facility in Brooklyn, New York, which is also used by Real Kosher Ice Cream, Inc. Unfortunately, products made in that facility could be contaminated with dangerous Listeria monocytogenes bacteria.

Did Anyone Get Sick?

According to the CDC outbreak investigation, an Ice Cream House mini dessert cigar novelty ice cream product and several environmental samples in the manufacturing facility tested positive for Listeria. This strain of Listeria matched the strain that sickened at least two people, according to the CDC.

Listeria Illnesses Linked to Kosher Soft Serve Ice Cream Cups

Two people in New York and Pennsylvania were hospitalized with severe Listeria illnesses after eating Soft Serve On The Go Ice Cream Cups that were sold by Real Kosher Ice Cream, according to health officials. At least 5 ice cream products that were sold by Real Kosher Ice Cream tested positive for Listeria.

These products were manufactured in the same facility where Ice Cream House also made desserts. All products made in this facility have been recalled and both companies have stopped production.

What Products Were Recalled?

The recall includes ALL products that were sold under the Ice Cream House® brand, including all dairy ice cream products and non-dairy (Parve) products, like ice creams, cakes, logs, and novelty items with the “Ice Cream House” logo on the package.

These products were sold at the Ice Cream House shop in Brooklyn, New York, and also through retail supermarkets in New York, New Jersey, and Ohio.

What is Listeria?

Listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria that can survive freezing and grow at refrigerator temperatures. Infections may not produce symptoms for up to 70 days. Infections can also spread beyond the digestive system into the brain and spinal cord, resulting in meningitis.

The symptoms of a severe Listeria infection may include:

  • Pregnancy complications or miscarriage
  • Mild flu-like symptoms
  • Fever
  • Muscle aches
  • Diarrhea
  • Upset stomach
  • Headache
  • Stiff neck
  • Confusion
  • Loss of balance
  • And more
