What is Listeria?

Listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria that can cause severe, life-threatening food poisoning infections. Unlike most types of bacteria, it can survive in foods in the freezer, including ice cream.

People who are infected may suffer invasive infections that spread beyond the digestive system to the brain and other parts of the body, resulting in meningitis (brain inflammation) and death. In pregnant women, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths.

Signs & Symptoms of Severe Listeria Infection

The symptoms of a severe Listeria infection usually occur within 2 weeks of eating contaminated food, but it can take up to 70 days. These symptoms may include:

  • Headache
  • Stiff neck
  • Confusion
  • Loss of balance
  • Convulsions
  • Fever
  • Muscle aches
  • Gastrointestinal symptoms
  • Diarrhea
