Walmart Recalls Marketside Green Beans and Butternut Squash

February 2019 — Walmart and other grocery stores in 9 states have announced a voluntary recall for Marketside® bagged fresh green beans and cubed butternut squash due to a possible risk of contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria that can cause severe food poisoning.

What Products Were Recalled?

Marketside Green Beans and Butternut Squash Recalled for Listeria Risk

The recall was issued by Southern Specialties Inc., of Florida, and includes about 200 cases of Marketside® brand 12-ounce and 32-ounce bags of green beans, and 16-ounce bags of butternut squash.

The recalled Marketside butternut squash bags have a “Best If Used By” date of March 6, 2019, and a UPC of 681131122351.

The recalled 12-ounce bags of green beans have a date of March 8, 2019, and a UPC of 681131328869.

The recalled 32-ounce bags of green beans have a date of March 9, 2019, and a UPC of 681131457385.

Why Was the Recall Issued?

Traces of Listeria were discovered on a food-contact surface during a routine test by a supplier, according to the FDA.

Where Was the Recalled Food Sold?

The recalled items were shipped on February 17, 2019 and potentially reached stores in the following 9 states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. They were sold at select Walmart stores, according to an announcement on the recall section of its website.

Were Any Illnesses Reported?

Southern Specialties did not report any illnesses in connection with the recall, but infections with Listeria can be very serious — especially for young children, older adults, and people with vulnerable immune systems.

Pregnant women who are infected may have no symptoms, but suffer a miscarriage, stillbirth, or life-threatening infection of a newborn baby. Symptoms may not appear for 70 days.

Symptoms of Listeria Illnesses

The Listeria

infection can cause bloodstream infections and fatal meningitis. The symptoms may include:

  • Headache
  • Neck stiffness
  • Abdominal pain
  • Nausea
  • Fever
  • Diarrhea
