March 20, 2024 — A lawsuit has been filed by a couple from Washington state who were both seriously burned when a Sunbeam CrockPot Pressure Cooker exploded.
The plaintiffs claim they were burned in November 2022 while using a Sunbeam CrockPot® 6-Quart Express Crock Multi-Cooker (Model Number K215JN), which has a pressure cooking feature.
When they were using their pressure cooker as normal, the lid opened while the contents were under pressure. This caused its scalding-hot contents to erupt from the product, resulting in serious burn injuries.
The lawsuit accuses Sunbeam of misleading customers about the safety of the CrockPot Pressure Cooker with advertising claims.
Some examples of those advertising claims include: “Once the pressure increases, the Lid cannot be opened,” and “At the end of cooking, the Lid cannot be unlocked until all the pressure is released.”
In November 2020, Sunbeam recalled approximately 914,000 CrockPot 6-Quart Express Crock Multi-Cookers (Model SCCPPC600-V1) due to a risk of lid detachment and burn injuries. There were 99 burn injuries reported at the time of the recall, ranging in severity from 1st-degree to 3rd-degree burns, according to the recall warning.
The lawsuit claims that the plaintiffs were not aware of the recall before the incident in which they were burned.
The lawsuit was filed against Sunbeam Products Inc. on March 14, 2024 in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington (Tacoma) — Case Number 3:24-cv-05208.
