Bagged Garden Salads Linked to Cyclospora Parasite Outbreak

June 22, 2020 — An outbreak of at least 76 Cyclospora parasite infections was linked to bagged salads sold at Hy-Vee, Aldi, and Jewel-Osco stores in 6 Midwestern states.

The recalled products include ALDI Little Salad Bar® Garden Salad (sold in Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota and Missouri), all Hy-Vee® Garden Salad (sold in Iowa Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska) and Jewel-Osco Signature Farms® Garden Salad (Illinois, Indiana, Iowa).

As of June 19, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported 76 confirmed illnesses, with 16 people hospitalized, in Iowa (28), Illinois (23), Kansas (1), Missouri (7), Nebraska (7) and Minnesota (10).

The illnesses began from May 11, 2020 to June 14, 2020, according to the CDC.

The FDA also opened an investigation to locate the source of the outbreak. More stores and salads may be linked to the outbreak.

Jewel-Osco recalled Signature Farms® Garden Salad in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa. The salads were sold in 12-ounce bags labeled with BEST IF USED BY dates of May 16 to July 4 (5-16-20 through 7-04-20) and UPC code of 21130 98135.

People who are infected with Cyclospora commonly suffer from frequent bouts of watery, explosive diarrhea. Without treatment, the diarrhea can last for weeks or months and lead to severe weight-loss.

Cyclospora infections can also cause symptoms like low appetite, stomach cramps, bloating, increased gas, nausea, fatigue, vomiting, body aches, headache, fever, and other flu-like symptoms.
