Houswise Fire Pit Explosion Lawsuit

Houswise Fire Pit Explosion Lawsuit

September 30, 2026  A man from Texas has filed a lawsuit against Furmia LLC after he was seriously burned by an explosion of flames when he was attempting to refuel a Houswise tabletop fire pit.

The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York against Furmia LLC, a company that designs, imports, and sells Houswise tabletop fire pits.

The lawsuit was filed just months after the CPSC warned the public in July 2026 to stop using Houswise fire pits. The company is now facing a growing number of tabletop fire pit lawsuits involving people who were severely burned.

According to the lawsuit, he purchased a Houswise Tabletop Fire Pit on Amazon.com in September 2024. In October 2024, a fire flashed out of the bottle as he was pouring liquid isopropyl alcohol into the fire pit’s reservoir.

The sudden explosion of flames burned his face, neck, ears, and right arm. He was burned on about 18% of his total body surface area, with a mix of partial-thickness and severe full-thickness burn injuries, which resulted in scarring. Full-thickness burns destroy all layers of the skin and can cause permanent disfigurement.

The lawsuit claims that Houswise fire pits are defectively designed because they use an open reservoir to hold burning liquid isopropyl alcohol or other liquid fuel. The user pours fuel into the same container where it burns, which presents a serious risk of flame-jetting.

According to the CPSC, flame jetting can occur when a fire pit is being refilled with liquid fuel. Even a tiny flame can ignite the vapor inside the fuel container as the fuel is poured, resulting in a flash-fire.

The CPSC says this can set off “an explosion that propels flames and burning liquid onto the consumer or bystanders.” The fuels these fire pits burn can reach flame temperatures over 1,600°F.

In December 2024, the CPSC issued a consumer alert stating that fire pits built this way violate the requirements of ASTM F3363-19, the voluntary standard that governs portable, unvented devices burning liquid or gel fuel. The CPSC warning also includes information about the number of injuries:

“CPSC is aware of more than two dozen reports of flame-jetting, fuel leaking outside of the fire pit, and unexpectedly high flames, resulting in seven injuries, including third-degree burns.”

The lawsuit also claims that Furmia continues to sell the fire pits to consumers. As of September 30, 2026, the Houswise website still lists their tabletop fire pits for sale. The same page advertises more than 200,000 fire pits sold.
