What is the Iraq War Fund?
The Iraq War Fund pays money to victims of terrorist attacks, including people who were injured, permanently disabled, or the family members of people who died.
The money comes from asset seizures and penalties against criminals who financed terrorists attacks and weapons like IEDs, IRAMs, and EFPs. Iran provided weapons and money to terrorists and insurgents in Iraq and Afghanistan who attacked and killed U.S. troops.
$6 Billion Paid to Victims of Terrorist Attacks
The Iraq War Fund is also known as The U.S. Victims of State Sponsored Terrorism Fund (USVSST). After it was initially funded with a $1 billion appropriation from Congress in 2015, billions of dollars has been seized from foreign banks and other entities through fines, penalties, and asset seizures, as punishment for illegally helping state-sponsors of terrorism, such as Iran. The USVSST has paid out $6 billion to terrorist attack victims.
Am I Eligible to Seek Compensation?
You may qualify to seek compensation from the Iraq War Fund if you:
- Served in Iraq from 2004-present, or Afghanistan from 2006-present
- Were involved in an IED / EFP / IRAM attack with a specific attack date (you need to know the date or have the information available)
- You suffered an injury in the attack where:
- You needed medical treatment for a physical injury; OR
- You were diagnosed with PTSD due to the attack
Banks Pay Millions for Illegally Financing Iranian Terrorist Attacks
Many of the weapons that were used to injure or kill U.S. troops in Iraq were financed by Iran, with the assistance of foreign banks. The U.S. Department of Justice has imposed multi-million dollar penalties on some of these banks, which has been used to pay compensation to the victims of terrorist attacks.
Here are a few examples of major banks who admitted to processing financial transactions or money laundering for Iran and other state sponsors of terrorism:
What Was The Iraq War?
The Iraq War, also known as Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF), were the longest sustained U.S. military operation since the Vietnam War. Since the beginning of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, more than 1.9 million U.S. military personnel were deployed as part of OEF / OIF.
Traumatic Brain Injuries From Iraq War
The Iraq War had a lower number of fatalities compared to Vietnam and WWII, but an estimated 10-20% of OEF and OIF Army and Marine Corps service members suffered brain injuries that have been linked to various long-term health outcomes.
PTSD and Symptoms of Mental Health Problems
Many veterans returned from the Iraq War with memories of combat and other horrible, life-threatening experiences. These experiences can cause severe mental health problems like Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), which can make it harder to return to civilian life.
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) estimates that 15% of military personnel who served in the Iraq War have PTSD, which is higher than any other war. The risk of PTSD increased with multiple deployments.
Some of the symptoms of PTSD include:
- Flashbacks
- Racing heartbeat or sweating
- Recurring memories or dreams related to the event
- Distressing thoughts
- Physical signs of stress
- Avoiding thoughts or feelings related to the event
- Hyper-arousal (easily startled, anxiety, insomnia, trouble concentrating, etc.)
- Negative thoughts
- Destructive behaviors
- And more
